Round 10 Preview – Bath @ Exeter – Saturday Afternoon

The clash of the weekend is at Sandy park as third placed Bath visit first placed Exeter who are on a high after beating Saracens.

How are they getting on?

Almost no introduction needed for Exeter here. They’ve won four on the bounce including beating Saracens at Saracens last Sunday. They’re looking like the team to beat for the rest of the regular season and having won their toughest fixture of the year they will be expecting a victory every week. Round 10 Preview – Newcastle @ Northampton – Friday Night

How are they getting on?

Poorly. After strong starts both teams are in free-fall, between them having not won a game in the Premiership since September. Northampton are coming off a few really poor losses against Worcester and Sale, traditionally two of the basement teams in the league. Before then they lost by sixteen points to Wasps and five to Gloucester. It is a pretty dismal run, the one mitigation being that only the Wasps result was at Franklin’s Gardens where they are usually much stronger. Round 9 Match Report – Exeter @ Saracens

The game of the weekend saw champions Exeter visit Saracens at Allainz Park for a sneak preview of the playoffs.

How did it go down?

Exeter were the first off the mark as Gareth Steenson kicked three points but Saracens responded almost immediately. Nathan Earle collected a high ball and fed Alex Goode who drew in the defence before giving the ball back to Earle on the nearside wing. Earle haired into the space before passing back to Goode who ran it into the corner putting the early score at 7-3. Continue reading “Round 9 Match Report – Exeter @ Saracens”

Round 9 Match Report – Gloucester @ Newcastle

On the back of a morale boosting victory against Saracens, Gloucester made the tough trip up to Newcastle on Friday Night to see if they could back it up.

How did it go down?

Gloucester opened the scoring sixteen minutes in after Willi Heinz took the ball from a lineout and fed young winger Henry Purdy, who cut against the direction of play and through the Gloucester defence before being stopped by a last-ditch ankle tap from Sinoti Sinoti. Round 9 Preview – Exeter @ Saracens on Sunday afternoon

How are they getting on?

Pretty well! Exeter and Saracens are the top two sides in the league on points and their performances so far this season have backed that up. Exeter are coming off three good wins in the Premiership, although a scrappy 10-6 victory at Sale was a rare poor performance from the Chiefs. Round 9 Preview – Gloucester @ Newcastle on Friday Night

Round 9 sees Gloucester head to Newcastle for amid-table clash between two sides who have been relatively unaffected by autumn international call ups.

How are they getting on?

I was surprised to see that Newcastle have managed to drop down to 9th in the table after their loss at Wasps last week, which is disturbingly reminiscent of their league position in recent years. It may not be as doom and gloom as it seems however as they are only behind 6th placed Wasps on points difference and only four points behind a playoff position. Round 7 Match Report – Gloucester @ Bath on Sunday

Round Seven of the Aviva Premiership was rounded-off by a West-Country derby as Gloucester took on local rivals Bath.

How did it go down?

There was action from the first minute at The Rec as Henry Trinder found a gap in Bath’s defence during the first five minutes. Trinder cut between highly-rated youngster Zach Mercer and Semesa Rokoduguni before finding Willi Heinz in space and running an intelligent dummy line to draw the covering defence and allow the scrumhalf to score in the corner.
